What is Hydro Jetting?
Hydro jetting is a professional drain cleaning method that uses a high-powered water jet — typically operating at 4,000 PSI or more — to scour the inside of sewer and drain pipes. A specialized nozzle is inserted into the drain cleanout and propels water both forward (to break through blockages) and backward (to wash debris down and out of the pipe). Unlike a drain snake, which simply punches a hole through a clog, hydro jetting cleans the entire pipe interior.
What Can Hydro Jetting Remove?
Hydro jetting can remove virtually anything that has built up inside a drain or sewer pipe, including: years of compacted grease and fat (especially in restaurant kitchens), tree and shrub roots, mineral scale and calcium deposits (common in LA's hard water), hair and soap scum buildup, sand, silt, and debris, and soft blockages that snaking cannot fully clear.
Hydro Jetting vs. Drain Snaking: Which Do You Need?
For a simple, localized clog — such as a hair clog in a shower drain or a small obstruction in a kitchen sink — a drain snake is fast, affordable, and effective. Hydro jetting is the right choice when: you have recurring clogs that keep coming back, multiple drains are slow throughout the house, you suspect grease buildup in kitchen lines, a camera inspection shows significant buildup inside the pipe, or you want to fully clean your sewer line as preventive maintenance.
Is Hydro Jetting Safe for My Pipes?
Hydro jetting is safe for most modern pipe materials — PVC, ABS, cast iron, and clay pipes in good condition. However, pipes that are severely cracked, corroded, or structurally weakened may be damaged by high-pressure jetting. This is why professional plumbers always run a camera inspection before jetting — to confirm the pipe is structurally sound.
How Much Does Hydro Jetting Cost in Los Angeles?
Residential hydro jetting in Los Angeles typically costs $300–$700 for a standard drain line. Main sewer line jetting ranges from $400–$900. Commercial jetting for larger pipes costs more. Pricing depends on the line size, length, and severity of buildup. Many homeowners find that the cost of jetting is far less than the cost of continued emergency drain calls.
When Should Homeowners Schedule Hydro Jetting?
We recommend hydro jetting: when camera inspection reveals significant grease or scale buildup, before pipe lining (sewer repair) to ensure a clean surface, after root intrusion treatment, and as preventive maintenance every 2–3 years for homes with recurring drain issues or large trees near the sewer line. Restaurants and commercial kitchens should consider quarterly service.
