Kitchen Remodel Plumbing: What LA Homeowners Need to Know Before They Renovate

Your kitchen remodel is only as good as the plumbing behind it. This guide covers everything from moving sinks to installing pot fillers, island plumbing, and dishwasher connections.

The Golden Rule: Plan Plumbing Before Cabinets

The single most costly kitchen remodel mistake is ordering cabinets and countertops before finalizing your sink and appliance locations. Kitchen cabinet layouts are built around standard measurements — but your drain and supply line locations may not match the new cabinet plan. Moving a sink drain under a slab foundation can cost $2,000–$5,000+ and may require jackhammering concrete. Consult your plumber before you commit to a cabinet design.

Moving Your Kitchen Sink

Moving a kitchen sink in Los Angeles involves rerouting the drain line, extending or relocating supply lines, and potentially running a new vent. Homes on raised foundations (crawl space) have the most flexibility — drains can be rerouted relatively easily. Slab foundation homes are more complex and costly. Moving a sink on a slab typically requires cutting a trench in the concrete, rerouting the drain, and patching. Discuss your foundation type with us during your free estimate.

Pot Filler Installation

A pot filler mounted above your stove is a popular upgrade in Los Angeles kitchen remodels. Installation requires running a water line (typically cold only, but sometimes both hot and cold) inside the wall to the stove location. This is typically a half-day project in most kitchens. The fill valve and arm are then installed after tile work is complete. Expect to pay $300–$700 for installation plus the cost of the fixture ($150–$1,500 depending on brand).

Kitchen Island Plumbing

Adding a sink to a kitchen island is one of the most technically challenging kitchen plumbing projects. Unlike a wall-mounted sink that can tie into existing wall vents, an island sink in the middle of the room requires either a vent run under the floor or an approved air admittance valve. Island drain lines must also maintain the correct slope across the full length of the island — which can require significant work on slab foundations. We assess feasibility during your consultation.

Dishwasher Connection

Installing a new dishwasher requires a hot water supply connection, a drain line connection to the sink drain, and coordination with an electrician for the power circuit. We handle the plumbing side of dishwasher installation. If you are replacing a dishwasher in the same location, this is a straightforward 1–2 hour job.

Refrigerator Water Line

Ice makers and water dispensers need a dedicated water supply line. We install copper or flexible braided stainless lines from the nearest cold water supply to your refrigerator location, with an easy-to-shut-off angle stop valve behind the fridge.

Permits for Kitchen Plumbing

Any drain line relocation in Los Angeles requires a permit. Fixture replacements in the same location typically do not. We evaluate your specific project and pull all required permits, handling all inspections on your behalf.
